It's a big boat! Go check it out. Explore for a while. There's several rooms dedicated to transit history.
The area is docked in a remote location that at times can be difficult to find, the area immediately surrounding the icebreaker is fenced off and open to the public at certain times. Walking around the area you can find another docking area that was at one time I'm was very nice, with newer planters that have not been kept up. The area has tons of potential and can be made beautiful with little effort.
Great visit. The tour guides are retired Sailors who served on the Alexander Henry. You will learn a lot!
It was closed when I arrived - just a head's up: if you're driving an RV over 27 feet or if you have a trailer, i suggest you park in the marina area 1/3 mile away and walk. Alternatively you should be able to turn around in front of the community services building just before the ship. *Assuming employees and visitors haven't effectively blocked this option* If you enter the loop parking area from the right there is a significant and short slope 50 feet before the parking lot for the ship and you will bottom out. If you enter from the left you can get in, but there is not enough space to turn around if you're 30 feet + or if you have a trailer. There's paved parking about 1/3 mile away, then walk the gravel road to the boat.
Interesting ship and history. The tour guide had lots of great info. Can't wait to see it qhen all the restoration is finished.
