Great place to stay. Be sure to go to the on-site Timbers or get the room service, they have fantastic soup! The rooms are spacious and clean. Nice TVs and good WiFi too. The location is right next to the airport and makes for a great base to go see the local sights from. Really a good place to stay.
I've stayed here a couple of occasions and had a great experience each time. The staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities are updated and very clean. They have pet friendly rooms which was part of the reason I've stayed here. The pool area included an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness area and a small patio area for parents to hang out while the kids play in the water. The restaurant/bar has great food and selection of drinks. I really enjoyed the Scandinavian theme that is apparent throughout the whole hotel, but especially noticeable in the lounge. The location is ideal if you are flying out of the TB airport which is right next door, and I would see constant shuttles ferrying people there from the front foyer. Everytime I've stayed here I was driving through TB on Hwy 17 and found the location to be great. Located on the corner of Arthur St and Hwy 17, it's a small detour which is very easy to navigate. If you're looking for an ideal located stop in TB that has all the facilities you could want with great service and pet friendly rooms then this is the spot. I stay here anytime I stop in Thunder Bay.
I attended a conference at the hotel in one of their halls. The space was clean and welcoming. The food provided for both breakfast and lunch was pretty good as far as buffet food goes. The waitstaff were polite and friendly. The room was a bit chilly and the podium microphone had some feedback issues.
This hotel is a historical classic. I have stayed here almost 20 years, thanks to our company booking. Though over the years it has undergone some changes, it still is in disrepair, floors in the rooms are dirty (black socks are white residue), bathroom amenities are minimal, tv is small, and worst of all there are electric fans in the shower/bathtub area! (Right over your head in the shower). I am not sure what electrical code allows this but I'm always concerned of electrical sparks raining down on my head some day! Shower carefully! For a northern Ontario hotel, you would expect friendly staff, but again this is not the case, though to be fair there are a couple, but for the most part they are not. Most of the staff I've seen for years, and still that cold air of indifference even disdain from them as you check in, or ask for anything. On the plus side it has a free shuttle from the airport, and is 4 minutes away, amenities around will get you groceries and alcohol, but most restaurants are at least 10-20 minutes walk, unless you eat in the hotel, which closes early, and at times that are earlier than posted. A brand new hotel is now next to this hotel, but if you have a choice maybe check them out, I'm not able to stay there, as our company has a contract with the Valhalla, but maybe you can. Good luck.
The hotel itself is nice. Great facilities and the staff are extremely nice. The beds are nice and the rooms are laid out very nicely. Unfortunately, my experience at the Timbers restaurant attached to the hotel was not a positive one. I had just landed after a 12 hour travel day and it was around 8pm by the time I got to the hotel. I just wanted a quick drink and bite before I crashed for the night. I ordered some wings and a beer. I got the beer quickly but it took an hour to get my food. The wings over cooked and my friend's nachos we're literally burned. The place wasn't busy at all, and it took 20 minutes to get a second beer. So despite that, the hotel is nice, but now I just go somewhere else for food.
